Walstrom Marine Launches New Marine Technician Apprenticeship Program

Walstrom Marine has partnered with Northwest Michigan Works! to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Marine Services Technician Apprenticeship in Northern Michigan.

The program is designed to create a clear path into the marine industry while helping address the ongoing need for skilled technicians across the Great Lakes region.

Program Overview

Participants in the apprenticeship will complete 6,000 hours of on-the-job training alongside experienced Walstrom technicians, along with 435 hours of structured technical instruction through employer and vendor-supported coursework.

The program combines hands-on experience with formal training, allowing apprentices to develop the skills required for a long-term career in marine service.

Hands-On Training

Apprentices will work directly with Walstrom’s service teams, gaining experience across a range of systems and service areas. Training is led by experienced technicians, providing day-to-day exposure to real service work and processes.

This approach is intended to build both technical ability and familiarity with the standards required in a professional marine service environment.

Supporting Workforce Development

The apprenticeship was developed in partnership with Northwest Michigan Works! and aligns with U.S. Department of Labor standards.

The goal is to support workforce development in Northern Michigan by creating a consistent pipeline of trained marine technicians. This benefits not only Walstrom Marine, but also the broader marine industry and boating communities throughout the region.

Why It Matters

Demand for qualified marine technicians continues to grow, particularly in markets like the Great Lakes where seasonal use and service needs are high.

By establishing a structured training program, Walstrom Marine is working to ensure that customers continue to have access to skilled service teams and reliable support.

Looking Ahead

The apprenticeship program represents a long-term investment in both the company and the industry.

As the program develops, it is expected to play a role in strengthening service capacity and supporting future growth across Walstrom Marine’s locations.
